According to Google, chat backups from WhatsApp for Android smartphones will no longer be available for free beginning in December and will be deducted from the storage limit of your Google account.

Unlike iOS users, Android users have previously had access to free WhatsApp chat backups.

The ramifications are obvious for anybody who do not have a Google “Google One” membership. WhatsApp conversation backups will now need to fit under the allotted 15GB of free data, which also serves as storage for Gmail, Google Photos, and a number of other Google apps.

The duration of your WhatsApp usage and the volume of media shared on the app will determine how long these backups last.

Which choices are available to you?

There are four main solutions available to users that have a lot of shared media assets and lengthy chat histories.

Initially, users have the option to completely refuse cloud backups. To do this, go to the conversation backup option in the WhatsApp settings menu and set the “Backup to Google Drive” option to Never.

There is a big trade-off with this option, though: there’s a chance you’ll lose all of your chat history in the event that your current phone gets stolen or broken.

The second method entails manually eliminating chats and media that occupy a significant amount of space in order to reduce the size of the backup. Although this is a useful way to avoid paying extra fees, consumers might have to make difficult choices about giving up media items that they would otherwise

The third choice would be to transfer all of your WhatsApp images and videos from your phone to an external device or USB stick. In order to maintain your access to Google’s free storage, this method might also assist in clearing up space on Google Photos.

The last thing you can do is purchase more Google storage by signing up for a premium plan. The 100GB bandwidth allotted under the AUD $2.49 “Basic” monthly plan should be sufficient for many customers to support WhatsApp chat backups without going over the allotted free storage limit.
